Roots of Change: The Grassroots Approach to Non-Profit in New Zealand

The Grass Roots Approach is an inspiring structure some non-profit organisations incorporate into their workplace culture (and we’re here for it!). It focuses on engaging and empowering local communities and individuals to drive change and achieve the organisations goals. It structured around the importance of community involvement and participation, while recognizing that true change must come from the BOTTOM UP, rather than being imposed from the TOP DOWN.

Using a grass roots approach in the workplace means that non-profit organisations listen to the needs and concerns of their local communities and involve them in the decision-making process, or the implementation of programs and initiatives. This approach helps non-profit organisations to build trust and strong relationships with the communities they serve, and to ensure that their efforts are aligned with the needs and priorities of the community.

One non-profit organisation that is rocking the grass roots approach here in New Zealand is the Aotearoa Youth Leadership Institute. The Aotearoa Youth Leadership Institute is an organisation that focuses on developing leadership skills in young people (talk about absolute super stars!). The organisations grass roots approach is demonstrated in its community-based programs, which involve young people in the planning and implementation of leadership initiatives. By involving young people in the planning process, the Aotearoa Youth Leadership Institute ensures that their efforts are aligned with the needs and priorities of the youth in their community, and to continuing building trust and strong relationships.

A grass roots approach is an engaging and empowering approach that helps non-profit organisations to go the extra mile in supporting and making a change in their communities.
